Keeping Information Current For Our Clientele
Beginning in January, all clients will be required to verify current information such as address, persons in household, and their ages. We are trying to keep our data current. This will help us to produce the USDA reports requred by the Greater Chicago Food Depository and make it easier to provide demographic information needed for grant applications.
We will also issue small cards that will show your last visit to the Pantry and when you are next able to visit the Pantry.
Volunteers Packed Food to Feed Hungry at Greater Chicago Food Depository
A group of 15 folks from supporting churches of New Hope Community Food Pantry braved a snowy day on Saturday, December 19, to volunteer at the Greater Chicago Food Depository. The group repacked corn flakes from large boxes each containing 319 pounds (that’s a lot of corn flakes) into bags each containing 8 ounces. 3,672 bags were assembled, packed into 153 boxes for shipping, with a total of 1,931 pounds processed. There were a total of about 50 folks working on this project.
We learned that 58 million pounds of food were distributed from the Greater Chicago Food Depository last year; with 60 million expected to be given out this year. They also told us that if they did not have volunteer support, they would need to hire an additional 42 full time persons for their staff. While they enjoy our free labor, we enjoy the benefit of receiving credits toward our monthly food orders based on how many hours our volunteers work at the depository. Thanks to Bob Burkhart and those who went with him to the depository for this work day. Watch for announcements about our next trip to the depository for your opportunity to participate.
